9% de la energía eléctrica generada a nivel mundial proviene de Solar
La energía solar es una fuente de energía limpia y sustentable que aprovecha la energía del sol a través de la captación de luz solar y su conversión en electricidad. Este proceso se realiza principalmente mediante el uso de paneles solares fotovoltaicos que convierten la luz solar directamente en electricidad. La energía solar es un pilar clave en el futuro de las bajas emisiones de carbono debido a su abundancia, sostenibilidad y cada vez más competitiva capacidad de generar electricidad.
El proceso básico de generación de electricidad a partir de la energía solar involucra la instalación de paneles solares que contienen células fotovoltaicas. Estas células están hechas de materiales semiconductores que absorben la luz solar y convierten la energía de los fotones en corriente eléctrica. Esta corriente, al ser continua, es entonces convertida en corriente alterna mediante inversores para adaptarse a las necesidades de la red eléctrica y del consumidor final.
Una de las principales ventajas de la energía solar es que es una fuente de baja emisión de carbono. Según el IPCC, la energía solar tiene una intensidad de carbono de 45 gCO2eq/kWh, significativamente menor que los combustibles fósiles, como el carbón, que emite 820 gCO2eq/kWh. Al igual que otras fuentes bajas en carbono como la energía nuclear (12 gCO2eq/kWh) y la energía eólica (11 gCO2eq/kWh), la energía solar contribuye significativamente a la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, ayudando a mitigar el cambio climático y reducir la contaminación del aire.
A nivel global, la energía solar está generando más del 9 % de la electricidad consumida, lo que refleja su creciente importancia en el mix energético mundial. En Estados Unidos, varios estados han tomado la delantera en la adopción de la energía solar. Estados como California, Nevada, Arizona y Nuevo México generan una proporción significativa de su electricidad a partir de energía solar, con California alcanzando casi un tercio. Estas cifras demuestran no solo la viabilidad de la energía solar como fuente primaria de electricidad, sino también cómo contribuye al desarrollo de un sistema energético más limpio y diversificado.
Además de sus beneficios ambientales, la energía solar, junto con otras tecnologías de baja emisión de carbono, como la energía nuclear, ofrece una solución coherente con el crecimiento continuo de la demanda de electricidad necesaria para sostener la electrificación y el desarrollo de tecnologías emergentes como la inteligencia artificial. A través del fortalecimiento y la expansión de estas fuentes limpias, podemos asegurar un suministro energético fiable y resiliente que priorice la sostenibilidad medioambiental para futuras generaciones.
