9% de la energía eléctrica generada a nivel mundial proviene de Solar
La energía solar es una forma de energía limpia y sostenible que se obtiene al capturar la luz del sol y convertirla en electricidad. Esta forma de energía ha ganado popularidad en todo el mundo debido a su abundancia y al hecho de que es una fuente renovable y baja en carbono. La tecnología solar se utiliza principalmente a través de paneles fotovoltaicos que se encargan de transformar la luz solar en energía eléctrica.
El proceso básico para generar electricidad a partir de la energía solar consiste en el uso de células fotovoltaicas que convierten la luz del sol en corriente eléctrica directa. Estos paneles están compuestos por semiconductores, como el silicio, que absorben los fotones de la luz solar, excitando los electrones y generando electricidad. La electricidad generada puede ser utilizada de inmediato, almacenada en baterías o integrada a la red eléctrica para su uso en momentos de alta demanda.
Una de las ventajas más significativas de la energía solar es su baja intensidad de carbono, con un valor promedio de 45 gCO2eq/kWh, muy inferior comparado con combustibles fósiles como el carbón y el gas, que producen 820 y 490 gCO2eq/kWh respectivamente. Este factor coloca a la energía solar junto con la energía nuclear (12 gCO2eq/kWh) y la energía eólica (11 gCO2eq/kWh) como líderes en la reducción de emisiones de carbono, vitales en la lucha contra el cambio climático causado por las altas emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero de las fuentes tradicionales de energía.
La energía solar ha logrado un impresionante incremento, representando actualmente aproximadamente el 9.14% de toda la electricidad consumida globalmente. Este crecimiento es aún más evidente en Estados Unidos, donde algunos estados muestran cifras sobresalientes: en Nevada, el 34% de la electricidad proviene de fuentes solares, mientras que en California es el 31%. En Nuevo México y Arizona, un 18% de la electricidad es generada por energía solar, y en Texas, un 11%. Estos porcentajes reflejan un compromiso creciente hacia la transformación del paisaje eléctrico estadounidense en uno más ecológico y sostenible.
La expansión del uso de la energía solar además fomenta un progreso económico y tecnológico, al mismo tiempo que asegura la independencia energética a largo plazo. A medida que la demanda de electricidad continúa creciendo con la electrificación de sectores y el auge de las tecnologías emergentes como la inteligencia artificial, recurrir a estas fuentes de energía baja en carbono es esencial para asegurar un suministro sostenible y limpio. La combinación de energía solar y nuclear se presenta como una solución clave para sostener este aumento en la demanda energética sin comprometer el medio ambiente.
